Just when you thought there were too many changes happening online, storage, uploading, downloading, social networking and on and on – the community of new music musicians decides they like Soundcloud. I’ve been using it sparingly for a couple years but I decided to give in to peer pressure and give my account some attention. I intend to use it mainly for my most experimental works and phonography.

PPP (featured on NIWO)

I was featured on a new release, Steve Layton – PPP track 4. Here are the new release liner notes.

Between April 26th-28th 2012, twenty-five musicians from around the U.S. and the world gathered at the music-sharing website known as ImprovFriday.com. The suggested theme for our sharing was simply “ppp;” i.e., the music term for “very soft and quiet.” How each person interpreted this in their own performance was left to them. This CD documents mash-ups I made during the course of the weekend event, of all the different tracks coming in to the site from these musicians. Some tracks were heavily edited, but most were left close to their original state, and simply allowed to interact with the other tracks in an unforced way.

Re-Release “Bats in the Belfry”

My subscription to TuneCore ran out, apparently, a couple weeks ago and I decided against renewal in favor of releasing a free copy of “Bats in the Belfry” – 2009 via my independent label “cellar door.” This album is a contemporary classical piano work for piano roll.

New Release: The Chrome Castle and an Overgrown Lawn

“The Chrome Castle and an Overgrown Lawn” is a somewhat eclectic album consisting of improvisation, sound art, ambient music, noise and drone characteristics. Someone once advised that I not use the word “experimental” when describing a work, as apparently some listeners are quickly turned off by the term. So I will say it is “adventurous” and quite fun.

We all need some free time

I will not make this a long philosophical essay on the merits of giving away music for free or charging for it. I will quickly point out that within the arts monetary gain is typically sought through grants and commissions, the latter being the status quo for quite a long time. Aside from the fact that for the moment I’m still focusing on non-traditional instrumentation, I’ve decided to give away my music for free at my personal label Cellar Door Records and here at the mirror of that label in the catalog/downloads section. This doesn’t necessarily apply to future or past works which I may release or have already released on an outside label or music loaded into distribution networks. I agree with both sides of the spectrum of the free-versus-charge-argument, but with the economy and the faulty socioeconomic present tense, it makes more sense to give away my music here at my website and personal label (cellar door records) free of charge. If things were to improve, switching positions isn’t entirely impossible. I am also in the process of researching the Internet Archives as a way to upload my music.

Confessions of a Deviant Machine: Con-V label

Dear Readers:

I am happy to finally announce the release of “Confessions of a Deviant Machine.” Landing at the outstanding Con-V label, its been a long time in the making (roughly a year). Anyway, I approached the free improvisation specialist, Lee Noyes, about collaborating on an electroacoustic project back in late 2009 and slowly we worked it out. Thanks again to my collaborator, Lee Noyes. It was a thrilling project.

Notation

Although I am fully engaged in electroacoustic, acousmatic, sound art, etc., I am not going to forget notation. Yesterday and today I spent a great deal of time recovering my old notation system and finally I set up a Sibelius account here.
